Teacher Top Tips: Using Artificial Intelligence (AI) Wisely at Home and School

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming an increasingly important part of education, offering students new ways to learn, explore ideas, and solve problems. When used responsibly, AI can deepen understanding, build confidence, and encourage independent learning. However, when relied on too heavily, it can limit critical thinking and reduce valuable learning opportunities.

Ms Cimentepe, Director of Studies, More Able and Talented Coordinator, and Chemistry and Science Teacher at North London Grammar School, shares her top tips for helping students use AI effectively both at home and at school.

Try First, AI Second

Students should always attempt their work independently before asking AI for help. The greatest learning often happens through problem-solving, perseverance, and learning from mistakes—not by receiving an instant answer.

Once students have made a genuine effort, AI can become a valuable learning tool. It can help check understanding, explain difficult concepts in a different way, identify gaps in knowledge, and reinforce learning with additional examples.

Use AI to Support Learning, Not Replace It

Artificial Intelligence should enhance learning, not do the learning for students. Using AI to complete homework, write essays, or solve every problem removes the opportunity to develop essential skills such as reasoning, creativity, and independent thinking.

Instead, students can use AI to:

  • Explain challenging topics.
  • Generate practice questions.
  • Review and improve their own writing.
  • Receive feedback on their work.
  • Explore different ways to approach a problem.

Always Check the Information

Although AI can provide helpful responses, it is not always accurate. Sometimes it presents incorrect information or misleading explanations with confidence. Developing strong digital literacy means learning to question information rather than accepting every answer at face value.

Students should compare AI-generated responses with their class notes, textbooks, and other trusted educational resources. Asking questions such as “Is this accurate?” and “Does this match what I’ve learned in class?” helps build critical thinking and responsible research skills.

Building Responsible AI Users

Artificial Intelligence is a powerful educational tool when used thoughtfully. By encouraging students to think independently first, to use AI as a learning assistant rather than a shortcut, and to verify the information they receive, they can develop the confidence, curiosity, and critical-thinking skills needed for the future.

At North London Grammar School, we believe the best learning happens when technology supports human thinking—not replaces it. By using AI responsibly, students can make the most of its benefits while continuing to grow as independent, resilient, and lifelong learners.
