At North London Grammar School, homework plays a vital role in reinforcing classroom learning and encouraging independent study.
To support academic progress while helping students manage their time effectively, homework is thoughtfully allocated with two main aims:
To ensure students do enough to reinforce their learning.
To help them recognize when to stop and avoid overload.
A homework timetable is provided to every student, outlining when homework will be set for each subject.
Students are encouraged to complete assignments on the night they are assigned.
Each student is given a homework planner to record and manage their tasks effectively.
In addition to regular homework, students are expected to dedicate time each evening to Extended Learning. This is a flexible, self-directed period designed to deepen understanding and build strong study habits.
Meaningful Extended Learning Activities include:
Spending additional time on incomplete or challenging tasks.
Creating revision materials.
Reflecting on and responding to feedback (e.g., DIRT sheets).
Correcting and improving assessed work.
Planning or reading ahead in preparation for upcoming lessons.
Completing extension or enrichment activities.
Reading academically enriching content such as books, blogs, broadsheet newspapers, or periodicals (e.g., National Geographic, History Today, New Scientist, The Economist, The Spectator, etc.).
Extended Learning encourages students to become independent, motivated, and intellectually curious learners.
