Our aim is for every child to feel happy, secure and excited to learn in a setting that feels very much like a home away from home.
We place great importance on building strong relationships and a true partnership between home and school. We operate an open-door policy and warmly encourage parents to be active participants in their child’s learning journey. Communication is key to this partnership, and we use an online learning journal called Tapestry to ensure parents feel closely connected to their child’s school life. Through weekly updates, photographs, videos and teacher comments, families gain a real insight into what their child is learning. Parents are also invited to comment and to share their own photos and videos from home or holidays, creating a, two-way dialogue that celebrates each child’s experiences both in and out of school.
A typical day in Reception is carefully structured yet full of discovery. Children take part in a balance of focused adult-led learning and child-initiated activities, where they develop essential skills across all areas of the curriculum. Lessons are short, purposeful and lively, ensuring children remain motivated, engaged and eager to learn, while developing confidence and independence.
We place a strong emphasis on early reading, writing and mathematics. Daily phonics lessons are taught through the Read Write Inc. Phonics scheme, supporting children to recognise sounds, blend words and develop reading and writing skills with confidence. In mathematics, learning is underpinned by the White Rose Maths scheme, helping children build strong number sense through counting, comparing quantities, recognising patterns and solving problems in meaningful, practical contexts. Rich language development runs through all areas of learning, supporting children to express themselves clearly and confidently.
We are proud to celebrate the diversity within our school community. Each child’s religion, culture and family traditions are valued and respected, and we actively create opportunities for children to share and learn from one another. Through stories, celebrations, music, food, discussion and special events, children are introduced to different cultures and traditions from around the world in an age-appropriate and meaningful way. This helps them develop understanding, respect and empathy, while recognising both what makes us unique and what we have in common. Our curriculum is ambitious, creative and responsive to children’s interests. Learning is as cross-curricular as possible and designed to spark curiosity and imagination.
Children explore the work of famous artists during Art, develop coordination and mindfulness through ball skills and yoga in PE, and learn about meditation and emotional wellbeing during PSHE. For example, art lessons inspired by Wassily Kandinsky’s Concentric Circles, using primary and secondary colours, naturally extend into science experiments investigating colour mixing and absorption using paper towels and coloured water. These connections deepen understanding and make learning meaningful and memorable.
First-hand experiences are a vital part of our Reception provision. Children enjoy trips to the theatre, farms and museums, and we regularly bring learning to life within the classroom. From watching chicks hatch from eggs to observing caterpillars transform into butterflies, children experience life cycles unfolding before their eyes – moments that inspire awe, wonder and rich discussion.
Learning then flows seamlessly into purposeful play. Through building, role play, painting, outdoor exploration and problem-solving, children develop creativity, communication and critical thinking skills. Play is a powerful vehicle for learning, allowing children to practise new skills, deepen understanding and apply their learning independently in a joyful and meaningful way.
Reception is also a time of significant personal growth. Children learn to be brave learners — to try new things, persevere through challenges and celebrate effort. They develop kindness, resilience and independence, supported carefully as they transition from nursery into full school life. By the end of the year, our children are not only academically prepared for Year 1, but confident, curious and proud of everything they have achieved.
