At North London Grammar School, we are committed to creating a calm, safe and supportive environment where all pupils can learn and thrive. Our approach to behaviour reflects our core belief that every child deserves the highest standards of care, learning and guidance, and that strong behaviour is taught, modelled and reinforced consistently. Our behaviour culture is rooted in respect, tolerance and trust, and supports our aim of developing confident, responsible and fulfilled young people who are a credit to themselves, their families and the school.
We have a clear Behaviour Curriculum which sets out the standards and routines expected of pupils in classrooms, corridors, social spaces and online. These expectations are explicitly taught through daily practice, assemblies, tutor time and staff modelling, so pupils understand how to behave positively and responsibly in all aspects of school life. Pupils are expected to be punctual, prepared for learning, courteous to others and committed to allowing everyone to learn without disruption.
We strongly believe that positive behaviour should be recognised and celebrated. Pupils who consistently demonstrate excellent attitudes to learning, effort and conduct are rewarded through praise, merits, awards, leadership opportunities and celebration assemblies. These rewards reinforce our high expectations and encourage pupils to take pride in their behaviour and achievements.
When behaviour falls below the expected standard, staff respond calmly, fairly and consistently. Clear systems are in place to address behaviour, support reflection and prevent recurrence. Sanctions are proportionate and are always accompanied by guidance to help pupils learn from their mistakes and improve future behaviour. Where appropriate, restorative approaches are used to repair relationships and rebuild trust.
We recognise that behaviour can sometimes be linked to additional needs or wider concerns. Pupils are supported through pastoral care, SEND provision and safeguarding processes where necessary. Adjustments and additional guidance are provided to ensure our approach is inclusive and that all pupils are supported to meet expectations.
Strong behaviour is built through close partnership between school and home. We work collaboratively with parents and carers to support pupils’ behaviour, communicate concerns promptly and celebrate success.
Behaviour at North London Grammar School is explicitly taught and consistently reinforced as part of daily school life. Leaders ensure that behaviour expectations are clearly defined, well understood and applied consistently across the school. Pupils are taught how to behave well through:
– A clearly structured Behaviour Curriculum outlining expectations in classrooms, corridors, social spaces and online
– Explicit teaching of routines and standards, particularly at transition points
– Regular reinforcement through assemblies, tutor time and PSHE
– Staff modelling of respectful behaviour and positive relationships
– Consistent application of rewards and sanctions so pupils understand the consequences of their choices
Staff are trained to create calm, purposeful learning environments, establish clear routines and use positive reinforcement to promote good behaviour. Where behaviour falls below expectations, responses are proportionate, fair and focused on improvement and restoration. Leaders monitor behaviour carefully to ensure expectations are upheld consistently and that pupils feel safe, supported and able to learn. Behaviour systems are reviewed regularly, and data is used to identify trends, ensure fairness and provide targeted support where needed. This approach enables pupils to develop self-discipline, respect for others and an understanding of how their behaviour contributes to a positive learning environment.
